ELIZA Leopold Explore Mondoir Studio Nationality: German Artistic discipline: painting Based in: Stadtilm, DE BiographyELIZA Leopold is a German contemporary artist based in Thuringia. She began developing her independent artistic practice in 2023, working primarily in painting, alongside original printmaking and mixed media. Her work has since developed into a documented and continuously expanding oeuvre structured through thematic work cycles. Her artistic process often begins with a philosophical question or conversation rather than a predetermined image. These initial thoughts are transformed through colour, form and recurring visual motifs into works that remain deliberately open to interpretation. Her practice explores perception, transformation, freedom, belonging, nature and the human relationship to an uncertain world. Leopold’s work is presented under the guiding principle “Every Painting Begins with a Conversation.” Her practice includes a systematically maintained catalogue raisonné and archive documenting the development and context of each work. Her work is increasingly presented through exhibitions, publications and international open calls. Artist StatementMy work begins with questions. What do we see before we understand? What remains when boundaries disappear? How much of our path is chosen, and how much is shaped by what surrounds us? I use painting as a space in which such questions can remain open. Rather than illustrating an answer, I create visual situations in which colour, landscape, figures and abstract forms meet and shift between recognition and uncertainty. Recurring themes include perception, transformation, freedom, belonging, memory, nature and the relationship between the individual and the world. I am interested in the moment when something familiar becomes ambiguous and the viewer has to complete the work through their own experience. For me, a painting is therefore not the conclusion of a thought. It is the continuation of a conversation.
