Bevor wir es sehen (Before We See It) Bevor wir es sehen explores the relationship between hope, perception and the possibilities that may exist beyond our immediate field of vision. Broad, interwoven fields of green, turquoise, yellow, pink and soft white create an atmospheric space suspended between landscape and abstraction. Water, vegetation, distance and light seem to emerge and dissolve, resisting any fixed interpretation. On the left, a large, highly abstracted bird extends its wings into the open pictorial space. On the right, a tiny boat drifts across a pale, water-like surface. A distant, rust-coloured strip suggests land on the horizon. The bird and the boat represent two different perspectives on the same reality. From the boat, the traveller can see only as far as the horizon allows. The bird, however, may already perceive what remains hidden from the traveller's view. The painting approaches hope not as a promise of a particular outcome, but as the recognition that reality may extend beyond what we can presently perceive. Part of ELIZA Leopold's Interpretationen des Lebens cycle, the work reflects on trust, possibility and the limits of human understanding. “Some things are already there before we are able to see them.” Original acrylic painting on canvas · 2026 · 80 × 100 cm · Unique artwork · ELIZA Leopold · Master Edition 3.0 · Work No. 026
Why collect this work?
An unstable horizon and radically unequal scales turn this painted landscape into a test of how little can be known from a single viewpoint.
- Leopold states that her paintings begin with questions rather than predetermined images. Here, that intention is realized through forms that remain poised between landscape features and abstract marks.
- In the photograph, dense greens weight the lower left while yellow and pale passages open the centre. A tiny boatlike mark sits against broad turquoise bands, and two pale arcs extend from a dark mass at left, making vision seem partial and unevenly distributed.
- The documented acrylic on canvas appears in opaque fields, translucent-looking overlaps and broken linear strokes. These contrasts interrupt spatial continuity, allowing water, vegetation and distance to emerge without becoming fixed scenery.
- The work is a focused encounter with the threshold between abstraction and recognition: a few small cues continually reorganize the surrounding colour into a possible world.

My work begins with questions. What do we see before we understand? What remains when boundaries disappear?
