Der Schritt (The Step) 2026 · Acrylic on canvas · 80 × 100 cm · Unique original Artwork No. 030 · Cycle: Interpretations of Life Der Schritt explores a woman's freedom to choose and shape her own path in life. A solitary female figure moves from a dark, structured world towards a luminous space of colour and possibility. The dense, almost architectural forms on the left contrast with an open composition of blue, turquoise, pink, red, orange and gold on the right. The woman is neither waiting nor being guided. She is already taking her own step. The colourful world ahead does not promise certainty or an easy destination. Instead, it represents the diversity of possible futures. Freedom, in this work, is not simply the desire to choose, but the right and genuine opportunity to act upon one's own decisions. The painting reflects a fundamental question: What does freedom mean if we cannot determine the direction of our own lives? “Freedom begins with the possibility of taking one's own step.” Part of ELIZA Leopold's documented oeuvre, Master Edition 3.0.
Why collect this work?
A bright vertical corridor separates a compressed dark wall from an expansive field of colour, making the lone figure’s forward step legible as resolve without presenting her destination as secure.
- Leopold reports that her paintings begin with questions and remain open rather than illustrating answers. That approach clarifies why the catalogue’s theme of self-determination is paired here with an indistinct endpoint.
- In the photograph, the figure stands near the central vanishing point. Rectangular forms crowd the charcoal left side, while broken blue, orange and pink passages spread across the right, opposing enclosure to multiplicity.
- The documented acrylic on canvas supports both opaque silhouettes and layered-looking fields of broken colour. Here, abrupt tonal contrast gives the figure clarity while leaving the surrounding architecture only partially resolved.
- The painting is significant for treating freedom as movement through uneven conditions, not as arrival. Its split composition keeps personal agency visible while questioning whether all available paths are equally accessible.
