Who is “we”? Wer ist wir? brings together numerous human figures within a densely interwoven pictorial space. Faces, profiles, colours and forms overlap while each figure retains its individuality. The work explores diversity not as separation, but as the foundation of community. Different identities, perspectives and ways of being coexist without having to become alike. A plant-like form growing through the centre acts as a connecting element — a shared axis of life rather than a symbol of uniformity. The deliberately unsettling title asks where the boundaries of belonging are drawn: Who is included when we say “we”? Why collect this work?
A tightly packed field of partial faces makes the collective legible not as a unified group, but as a structure assembled from differences, interruptions and repeated acts of looking.
- Leopold says her practice begins with questions and leaves them unresolved. The German title, Wer ist wir?, meaning “Who is we?”, frames these figures as a test of how collective identity is defined.
- In the photograph, profiles face across abrupt black contours while eyes recur at different heights. Hats, hair and bodies become nested arcs, and the pale branching shape at centre provides the only sustained vertical link through the crowd.
- The documented acrylic on canvas supports a pictorial structure built from flat passages, strong outlines and layered colour. Changes from pale areas to dense blue, red and black keep individual figures distinct even where their boundaries interlock.
