Als wäre es unsere Wahl (As If It Were Our Choice) Als wäre es unsere Wahl explores the tension between free will and the invisible conditions that shape human decisions. A solitary black figure stands at the vanishing point of an expansive, vividly coloured composition. From the edges and foreground, sweeping paths of colour converge towards a luminous centre. On the left, reds, oranges, yellows and violets create a warm, energetic space; on the right, blues, turquoise and greens suggest a contrasting field of experience and possibility. At first glance, the figure appears to stand before a multitude of possible paths. Yet the composition introduces a fundamental ambiguity: are these paths opening up before the individual, or have they already led to this very moment? The painting asks whether we truly determine our direction, or whether our choices emerge from experiences, circumstances and possibilities that existed long before we became aware of them. Part of ELIZA Leopold's Gedankenräume cycle, the work examines freedom not as an unquestioned condition, but as a philosophical problem. The abundance of colour suggests limitless possibilities, while the strict perspective quietly challenges that impression. “Perhaps we choose our path. Perhaps we merely choose among the possibilities life has made available to us.” Original acrylic painting on canvas · 2026 · 80 × 120 cm · Unique artwork · ELIZA Leopold · Master Edition 3.0 · Work No. 032
Why collect this work?
A small black figure interrupts the point where broad bands of colour converge, making perspective serve two contrary readings: routes appear to open outward while also fixing the body at a predetermined intersection.
- Leopold reports that her practice begins with questions rather than predetermined images. In this painting, that intention is supported by a spatial structure that withholds any clear direction of travel.
- The photograph shows warm reds and yellows concentrated at left and blues and greens at right. Sweeping bands narrow around the central figure, while the surrounding rectangular marks remain comparatively flat, suspending it between landscape and diagram.
- The documented acrylic on canvas makes possible both dense colour blocks and layered-looking passages. Here, their abrupt contrasts organise the scene while the figure’s unmodulated black silhouette resists integration into either field.
- The work gives a concrete curatorial form to the artist-reported theme of free will: a single-point perspective that usually promises movement instead exposes how apparent alternatives can share the same structural limits.
