Noch fließt es (It Is Still Flowing) Noch fließt es presents a landscape suspended between the abundance of water and its gradual retreat. On the left, deep blues and turquoise tones evoke a living world of mountains, vegetation and expansive water. Towards the right, the landscape becomes increasingly pale and dry. A distant city emerges beneath a small yellow sun, while an irregular, luminous boundary runs between the two worlds. This shifting boundary may suggest a river, a coastline, a receding water level or a fracture within the landscape. Its ambiguity is essential: change is already visible, but its outcome remains uncertain. The painting reflects on water not only as a natural element, but as a fundamental condition of life. Rather than depicting an irreversible catastrophe, it captures a moment in which awareness and responsibility still matter. The decisive word is still. Water continues to flow. The future has not yet been determined. “It is still flowing. And that is precisely why not everything has been decided.” Part of ELIZA Leopold's Interpretationen des Lebens cycle. Why collect this work?
A pale, branching channel separates saturated mountains and vegetation from a sparse city, making water both the landscape’s connective structure and the measure of its possible retreat.
- Leopold states that she uses ambiguity to keep questions open. Here, the central form can be read as river, shoreline, ice, or fracture, so the environmental meaning remains unresolved rather than illustrative.
- The photograph shows dense cobalt and turquoise concentrated at left, while cream and brown dominate the right. The irregular blue boundary narrows toward the distant skyline, placing urban settlement beside a visibly changing terrain.
- The documented acrylic on canvas makes possible both opaque coverage and layered variation. In the photograph, broad, broken fields of colour oppose the finer dark marks used for trees, plants, and buildings.
- Dated 2026, the title Noch fließt es, or It Is Still Flowing, turns “still” into a temporal hinge. The painting is pertinent to encounters concerned with water scarcity because it pictures change as underway, not complete.

My work begins with questions. What do we see before we understand? What remains when boundaries disappear?
