Was wir darin sehen (What We See in It) 2026 · Acrylic on canvas · 120 × 80 cm · Unique original Artwork No. 041 · Cycle: Interpretations of Life What do we truly see when we look at the world? And how much of what we perceive has already been shaped by our experiences? What We See in It explores the relationship between perception, memory and interpretation. Abstract fields of colour intersect with fragments of landscapes: water, mountains, sky and vegetation emerge between layered surfaces of deep blue, earthy red and luminous tones. The composition resembles a series of windows opening onto different aspects of the same world. Yet none offers a complete or neutral view. Colours overlap, boundaries interrupt the landscape, and familiar forms appear transformed by the layers surrounding them. The painting suggests that our experiences do not simply belong to the past. They remain present in the way we perceive and interpret what lies before us. Memory becomes a lens through which reality acquires meaning. Rather than presenting a single truth, the work invites viewers to reflect on their own perspective. “We do not only see what lies before us. We see it through what lies behind us.” Part of ELIZA Leopold’s documented oeuvre, Master Edition 3.0.
Why collect this work?
A continuous road crosses a grid of interrupted landscapes, making perception feel assembled from partial, competing views rather than received as a coherent scene.
- Leopold’s profile describes a practice concerned with perception, memory and ambiguity. Here, those concerns become legible through fragmentation rather than relying on the stated theme alone.
- Mountain, water and tree motifs recur across differently scaled panels. Hard vertical divisions repeatedly cut through these scenes, while the curving road resists the grid and provides the composition’s strongest continuity.
- Catalogued as acrylic on canvas, the painting uses acrylic’s capacity for opaque blocks and overlaid marks to shift between scenic description and areas where colour becomes the primary subject.
- Within displays of contemporary landscape or abstraction, this work can clarify how framing alters recognition: each panel supplies enough information to suggest a place, but none establishes a complete viewpoint.

My work begins with questions. What do we see before we understand? What remains when boundaries disappear?
