Was vor uns liegt (What Lies Ahead) Was vor uns liegt explores the quiet freedom of recognising possibilities without feeling compelled to pursue them. A solitary female figure stands at the threshold of an architectural space, looking out towards a luminous, partially undefined landscape. Behind her lies the sheltered familiarity of the present; before her, an expansive world of turquoise, blue, yellow, rose and orange unfolds. The landscape does not reveal a single destination or a clearly defined path. Instead, it suggests a multitude of possible directions. The figure remains still, neither turning away nor stepping forward. Her presence transforms the painting from a narrative of departure into a reflection on awareness and choice. The work challenges the assumption that possibility must always lead to action. Remaining, observing and simply knowing that other paths exist can be meaningful expressions of freedom. Part of ELIZA Leopold's Interpretationen des Lebens cycle, the painting considers the relationship between personal development, perception and the open nature of the future. “The world does not ask us to seize every possibility. Sometimes it is enough to know that it exists.” Original acrylic painting on canvas · 2026 · 70 × 50 cm · Unique artwork · ELIZA Leopold · Master Edition 3.0 · Work No. 037
Why collect this work?
A rigid architectural threshold compresses the solitary figure at the left, while the open waterscape occupies most of the painting. This imbalance makes stillness, rather than departure, the work’s decisive action.
- Leopold states that her paintings begin with questions and keep familiar forms ambiguous. Here, the recognisable figure and landscape support that aim without resolving whether she is pausing, choosing, or simply observing.
- In the photograph, the figure faces a low horizon beneath a sky built from broad, broken passages. Similar fragments continue through the water, weakening any clear route between foreground and distance.
- Catalogued as acrylic on canvas, the painting uses overlapping opaque areas and exposed interruptions to hold architecture, reflection, and atmosphere between description and abstraction. The medium permits sharp spatial divisions alongside visually broken fields.
- Encountering this work within a collection can focus attention on choice without action. Its unresolved threshold complicates the familiar image of a lone figure facing the future by treating awareness itself as a form of freedom.
