Der Atem des Atlantiks – Original II (The Breath of the Atlantic – Original II) Der Atem des Atlantiks – Original II explores the ocean as a living, interconnected world whose beauty and vulnerability are inseparable. An intense blue field is animated by organic marks, circular forms, delicate white traces and shimmering accents of gold and copper. The composition evokes ocean currents, microorganisms, coral structures and drifting particles, while darker fragments suggest the traces of human intervention. A sequence of colourful circles moves across the lower part of the painting. They may be understood as cells, bubbles or cycles of life. Above them, slender white forms rise through the blue, creating a rhythm of growth, disturbance and movement. This painting is the second of two independently created originals exploring the same artistic idea. While both works share a common theme, each is a unique painting with its own composition and atmosphere. Part of ELIZA Leopold's Interpretationen des Lebens cycle, the work reflects on humanity's relationship with the natural world. We are not separate from the ocean's fragile systems; we are part of them, capable of causing harm but also of choosing responsibility. “We are the ghost nets — but also the hands that cut through them.” Original acrylic painting on canvas · 2025 · 40 × 30 cm · Unframed · Unique artwork · ELIZA Leopold · Master Edition 3.0 · Work No. 008
Why collect this work?
A low procession of ringed forms and a higher register of suspended white marks turn the blue field into a system whose order is repeatedly interrupted.
- Leopold says her paintings begin with questions and remain open rather than illustrating answers. Here, ambiguous forms support that aim: they can suggest bubbles, cells, organisms, or debris without settling into a single identity.
- The photograph shows bright circles crossing the lower edge while narrow white forms rise at uneven intervals. Gold, red, and dark marks gather between them, making the space read alternately as an underwater scene and an abstract map of circulation.
- The documented acrylic-on-canvas medium permits sharply contrasting opaque marks across the blue ground. Stamping, dragging, or surface texture cannot be confirmed from the photograph, but the varied edges produce distinct visual rhythms.
- Encountering this 2025 painting within Leopold’s stated concern for human relations with nature focuses attention on a productive uncertainty: the dark fragments may be life within the system or evidence of its disturbance.

My work begins with questions. What do we see before we understand? What remains when boundaries disappear?
