Biography

Shalu has received a Certificate of Merit from the Prafulla Dhanukar Art Foundation, Maharashtra,2021. She has participated in group shows such as Keshav Art Foundation, 'East Rising' by Jaipur Contemporary, New York and ‘The Dreamers' by The Holy Art, London and Purposeful Mayo. Her work ‘Tiny Inner Voices’ from the ‘Body Language’ series has been selected by Spolp Design,USA on the theme 'Metal + ? =’ and was a highlighted woman artist in the women’s history month by the Gallery by MUI. Shalu has been featured in the second issue of The Third Iris zine, Luminality; The Best Address Company; The Indian Art Express and The hindu.com. and on online platforms such as Artdemic by The Gujral Foundation,The Curators Salon and Folx gallery. She has participated in an art fund raiser organised by The Fearless Collective named ‘Fearless Immunity’ and Asian News, The new Indian Express, The Daily Thanthi, The Ritz Magazine, Deccan Chronicle, Ianslife, Canindia, Socialnews.xyz, Trak.in, NewsBytes and the Glitz. Shalu inaugurated her 4th and 5th solo show at Canvas 360 in Ahmedabad and VA Gallery, Chennai, titled ‘Design of Displacement’ and “Earth Stories” respectively. Shalu was part of Indo Korean Cultural and Information Centre organised by K-Art, International Artist Exchange in Busan ,Korea.Her works were GICEA, Ahmedabad. She has been associated with Archer Art Gallery, Ahmedabad, Gallery 78, Hyderabad and VAGallery,Chennai.She has recently had a solo online show Texturex d erosion by Terrain Art, Delhi. Her work has also been selected for the Mahsu 6th International annual art Exhibition, in shimla.

Artist Statement

My practice is multidisciplinary and rooted in mixed media. I work through mark making as a way to explore the relationship between nature and the human presence, allowing my work to move fluidly between abstraction and figuration. Emotion is central to my process—it becomes the thread that connects material, gesture, and memory. I use unconventional techniques such as bleaching, burning, rust marks, cyanotype, and layered, textured painting. Each work unfolds through an alchemical process where materials react, change, and leave behind traces of time. These marks carry their own logic—bleach corrodes, rust builds, fire consumes, sunlight records—mirroring the impermanence and unpredictability of human emotion. Chance plays an important role in my work. I enjoy navigating the space between control and chaos, allowing the process to guide the outcome. There is no fixed beginning or end; the work evolves continuously. Intuition leads my decisions, and only later do I step back to see if a direction reveals itself. My imagery holds ambiguity and uncertainty. While the stories are personal, they remain open and universal, inviting viewers to slow down, look closely, and discover their own meanings within the layers and marks beneath the surface.
