This work is part of the Design of Displacement series, where the earth is viewed from above as a shifting, abstracted terrain. Seen through an aerial lens, landscapes dissolve into textures, colours, and rhythmic patterns, evoking both familiarity and distance. The surface becomes a map of movement and transformation, reflecting how displacement alters perception—turning land into memory, pattern, and trace rather than a fixed place.
Why collect this work?
A rigid grid contains three irregular central masses, setting measured division against forms that appear to spread, overlap, and resist clear boundaries.
- Shalu describes mark-making as a way to examine nature and human presence, with chance mediating control. Here, that stated concern helps frame the tension between the grid and less regulated forms.
- In the photograph, pale horizontal and vertical bands partition a dark field into cells. Repeated reddish fragments occupy several compartments, while the larger cream, orange, and brown forms obscure the grid at the centre.
