Biography
Osman Mia is a self-taught Malaysian artist working primarily in acrylic, blending abstraction and expressionism in a style he calls "Charismatic Abstract". His passion for painting began in childhood, but took a defining turn in 2003 when he discovered acrylics. With a background in Mechanical Engineering, his analytical precision merges with his artistic instincts, creating works that balance technical discipline with expressive freedom. In 2003, an artist challenged him to create works that "grip" the viewer. It made him realised that a painting must not only be beautiful;—it has to be captivating. Since then, he has sought to create works with emotional resonance on subjects that shape positive human experiences. His artistic direction encourages viewers to recognise the blessings in their lives, believe in their potential for growth, and care for their communities. After a hiatus from 2014 to 2024 due to his professional career, Osman has returned to the art world in 2025 with a renewed vision, focusing on original works. Incorporating interesting shapes and lines, glazing and the occasional impasto to evoke depth and emotion, his works have a unique, recognisable style. He recently exhibited at the 'NADI/Inner Rhythm' group exhibition at Karya di Janda Baik gallery (June–July 2025) and at the 'Living with Art' group exhibition at KL City Gallery (January 2026). He is now preparing for a joint exhibition at Kokopelli Templer gallery in March 2026.Artist Statement
I call my art "Charismatic Abstracts" because just as certain individuals possess an effortless magnetism, I believe artworks, too, can embody charisma — radiating a calm confidence that transforms their surroundings. Therefore, my paintings are designed to captivate while emanating warmth and positivity, and to bring refined energy into any space they inhabit. At the heart of my work is a simple conviction: that art can remind us of what is good and beautiful in the world. Too often we see the glass as half empty; through my paintings, I invite viewers to see it as half full. My art is both a reflection of gratitude and a quiet celebration of optimism — a visual affirmation that beauty still abounds. I paint primarily in acrylics, working in layered transparencies that allow light and colour to interact with depth and subtlety. Shapes, lines, marks and colour intertwine across the surface, creating harmony and balance through thoughtful composition. Each piece is composed to feel complete — visually satisfying, emotionally resonant, and alive with presence. Ultimately, I paint to inspire. My Charismatic Abstracts are meant to uplift the spirit, enrich contemporary interiors, and serve as reminders that there is much to be thankful for.Exhibitions
