Sometimes a tragic scene can capture our attention and stay in our minds for a very long time. Shakespeare's Hamlet contains such a scene. Ophelia had made her love, the Prince Hamlet, feel betrayed for spying on him for her father. The story gets more complicated—or interesting—after Hamlet accidentally killed Ophelia's father after mistaking him for someone else. Ophelia was driven to madness. Finally, she fell into the brook with flowers she carried. Instead of climbing up, she laid afloat singing until she was finally pulled under. Thus Shakespeare has etched into the minds of millions, the image of a beautiful woman in full flowing gown, lying serenely in the water with flowers around her.
Why collect this work?
Broad, interlocking curves recast Ophelia’s drowning as a structure of concealment: no figure is fixed, but forms appear suspended, covered and drawn downward.
- Mia calls his practice “Charismatic Abstract” and states that he seeks emotional resonance through shape, line and colour. Here, the tragic subject complicates his stated optimism, putting compositional harmony to a darker use.
- In the photograph, dark green bands cross pale blue, pink and grey passages like heavy currents. Fine reddish contours continue across colour boundaries, suggesting a body or drifting fragments without resolving either.
- The catalogue identifies acrylic on paper. Acrylic can support both veiled colour and denser coverage; here, the photographed overlaps alternate between apparent transparency and obstruction, making submergence a visual condition rather than an illustrated event.
- Made in 2025, the painting is a pointed example of literary adaptation through abstraction. Its title retains Shakespeare’s Ophelia, while the image replaces narrative detail with pressure, suspension and partial disappearance.
