Biography
Hansa Sethi is a contemporary artist whose practice is rooted in psychological and philosophical inquiry. Her work explores the intersections of thought, emotion, and existence, where internal states become sites for questions around identity, survival, and being. Shaped by lived experience, Sethi engages themes of inner conflict, vulnerability, resilience, and the fragile threshold between losing oneself and choosing to remain. Rather than resolving these tensions, her work holds space for them, revealing the silent negotiations of the mind. Through layered visual language, she transforms psychological experience into forms that invite reflection on the complexities of living.Artist Statement
My practice is rooted in a lifelong relationship with drawing and image-making, which began in childhood as an instinctive way of observing, processing, and expressing the world around me. What began as a natural impulse gradually developed into a sustained artistic language through which I continue to explore the complexities of human experience. A significant turning point deepened this relationship with art. During a period of severe depression, I experienced an invisible emotional weight—what I describe as an unseen gravity. Art became a necessary space through which I could confront, understand, and endure that experience. While that moment transformed my direction, my practice has since expanded into a broader inquiry into psychology, behavior, and existence. I am drawn to the contradictions within life: how a person can appear whole, stable, and vibrant outwardly while carrying an internal void that resists explanation. My work explores psychological states, emotional conflict, vulnerability, and resilience, alongside philosophical questions of meaning, identity, and the nature of being. Working through emotional abstraction, I seek to give form to feelings that cannot easily be spoken. Color, texture, and layered compositions become vehicles for tension, fragmentation, beauty, and endurance. I am especially interested in paradox—the coexistence of heaviness with vitality, despair with color, and silence with intensity. Each work becomes a space where presence and absence, fullness and emptiness, color and void can exist simultaneously. Through this process, I aim to create images that invite reflection on how we feel, survive, and make meaning within the human condition.Exhibitions
