"Exhaustion" emerged from a place of deep introspection, where I wanted to capture the duality of outward calm and inner turmoil. As I painted, I envisioned a figure whose face appears serene, almost expressionless, yet within, the mind's branches stretch to their limits, shedding the weight of fatigue like dry, dark leaves. The swirling, chaotic branches represent the complexity of thoughts that extend endlessly, a testament to the mental exhaustion hidden beneath a composed exterior. I layered vibrant blues and greens to evoke a sense of calm, juxtaposed against the dark, tangled branches to highlight this inner struggle. Through this piece, I hope viewers feel the tension between the visible and the hidden, the calm facade and the chaotic mind. It's an invitation to reflect on our own moments of exhaustion and the silent battles we carry within.
Why collect this work?
Exhaustion turns a nearly symmetrical, tree-like figure into a conflict between composure and overload: the centered vertical body steadies a crown of marks that seems close to engulfing it.
- Sethi states that her practice gives visual form to difficult emotional states. Here, that intention operates through ambiguity, making body, face and vegetation difficult to separate rather than illustrating a fixed condition.
- In the photograph, a dense canopy of black and yellow strokes spreads from a narrow central form. Blue and green passages remain visible behind it, so apparent growth also reads as pressure and obstruction.
