This collection is the result of my exploration and reflection on the independent potential of the language of painting a place where painting is released from the task of representing the external world and enters an autonomous realm. In these artworks, non-representational abstraction is not the elimination of reality but the opening of new horizon for emotion and thought. For me, painting is a field of freedom; freedom from imagery, from fixed narratives, and from everything that confines the language of painting to representation. This freedom makes possible the emergence of structure that can only exist within painting itself independent of any external reference. Each artwork evolves through the act of painting, and meaning emerges through the encounter between the artwork and the viewer. "After Representation" is an invitation to experience painting directly; a space in which color, line, texture, rhythm, and movement are used not to describe objects but to create a world beyond.
Why collect this work?
A dark vertical passage interrupts stacked bands of hot colour, making obstruction, rather than recognizable subject matter, the painting’s central event.
- In her supplied statement, Sama Tari frames the 2026 series as an exploration of painting freed from external reference. Here, spatial suggestions persist, but no single landscape reading becomes secure.
- The photograph shows broad red, yellow, orange and muted green passages crossing the sheet. Descending maroon strokes gather near the centre-left, checking the horizontal movement and dividing the composition without forming a firm boundary.
- The documented acrylic on paper supports opaque overlaps and abrupt colour changes. Dragged-looking marks remain legible in the photograph, recording directional variation, although their physical depth and exact surface cannot be established from the image.
- At the catalogued size of 29 by 42 cm, the work compresses competing vertical and horizontal forces into a modest format. It provides a focused case for considering how abstraction can approach landscape structure while refusing depiction.
