In Unspoken Connection, silence becomes a language. Two figures stand apart, yet remain bound—revealing that distance does not erase connection. The work speaks to the quiet strength of relationships that exist beyond words. Through this work, I invite the viewer to reflect on the relationships in their own life—the ones that may not always be spoken, but are deeply felt.
Why collect this work?
Two back-to-back figures fill the square canvas, turning physical contact without exchanged glances into a precise image of closeness held alongside separation.
- Akano describes his practice as exploring identity, emotion and human connection. Here, that concern is concentrated in posture rather than narrative action, consistent with his account of relationships communicated beyond words.
- The photographed work shows overlapping shoulders, opposing profiles and a shared field of yellow clothing. Their compressed placement joins the figures, while their outward gazes withhold direct communication. A low, multicoloured cityscape intensifies the contrast between private contact and public surroundings.
