Al Wathba Salt Lake Capturing the salt lake of Al Wathba, Abu Dhabi, on canvas was is an irresistible challenge. The depth of the blue lake, contrasted with the crusty salt formations, created a mesmerizing scene. The spectrum of blues and greens within such a small speck of lake land was spectacular. Truly, which artist could resist painting this natural wonder? As an artist I find solitude, serenity, therapy, hope and a little adrenaline rush in painting water forms like ocean, sea, glaciers and lakes like this! Artist Nasha Maryam
Why collect this work?
A sharply divided square compresses a broad salt-lake landscape into an encounter between open water and an irregular mineral edge.
- Maryam describes water and desert as recurring subjects connected to her life in the UAE. Here, that focus is narrowed to Al Wathba and stripped of horizon, sky, or figures.
- The photograph shows a largely uninterrupted blue-green field meeting a pale, densely marked area along a wavering boundary. This near-vertical split makes shoreline change, rather than distant scenery, the painting’s central event.
- The catalogue identifies acrylic and texture paste on canvas. Their contrast permits broad colour beside built relief, turning the depicted division between water and salt into a material one, although the photograph cannot establish the surface’s exact feel.
- At 20 by 20 centimetres, the work reduces a geographically specific lake to a compact study of opposing surfaces. It provides a focused way to consider how landscape painting can register mineral formation without relying on panoramic description.
