The Ritual captures an authentic fragment of urban folklore deeply rooted in everyday street life. The painting portrays two close friends from the neighborhood, completely absorbed in the precise act of rolling a joint. Within street culture, this is far more than a casual habit—it is a ritual, a shared daily practice that strengthens bonds and creates an atmosphere understood only by those who have lived within that environment. Technically, the work combines the raw energy of the street with my distinctive approach to dark surrealism. The faces of the two figures emerge from the folds of crumpled paper, gradually revealed from a deep velvet-black background through the careful orchestration of chiaroscuro. They are illuminated by an intense neon-green glow that amplifies the scene’s mysterious and intimate atmosphere. Above one of the figures, a miniature origami bird wearing a crown appears as a symbolic guardian of the neighborhood hierarchy. The Ritual resonates with the slow, heavy atmosphere of the city’s nocturnal corners, elevating an ordinary subcultural practice into a timeless reflection on ritual, belonging, and human connection.
Why collect this work?
Two faceted heads are suspended above a small, concentrated hand movement, making partial visibility central to how this scene of shared ritual is understood.
- The artist states that his PAPER CUTZ series develops faces found in crumpled paper. That approach clarifies the fractured heads here, whose folds carry expression without stable facial features.
- In the photograph, chartreuse light isolates one head and the paired hands against a near-black field, while a second head recedes in violet shadow. The uneven illumination directs attention from obscured identities to coordinated action.
- Catalogued as mixed media on canvas at 100 by 200 cm, the painting uses a tall format to sequence crowned bird, heads, and hands. The artist identifies spray cans and airbrush as means of building transitions between light and shadow.
- The artist describes two friends rolling a joint and interprets the act as neighborhood bonding. The work is significant for translating that specific street practice through concealment rather than documentary description, leaving belonging legible in gesture more than likeness.
