Indonesia is incredibly rich. We all know that. The facts, figures, and countless accounts of its wealth speak for themselves. What Indonesia lacks is not wealth, but the willingness of its leaders and people to stand together against injustice. Instead, they seem perfectly capable of standing side by side when there's something to gain for themselves, when it comes to lining their own pockets and filling their own stomachs. But when the conversation turns to public welfare, equal justice, protecting forests for future generations, or making education a priority, indifference is often the first thing that comes to mind. This work reflects what is happening in Indonesia today. Its natural environment is being destroyed and its resources ruthlessly exploited by oligarchs. Its people are kept ignorant, fed a constant stream of sexualized content, gambling, beauty standards, and images of other people's wealth that they are encouraged to admire, even though such wealth may remain forever out of their reach. Its officials are corrupt and oppressive. Its law enforcement officers work hand in hand with thugs to strengthen their grip on power, ruling through fear and brutality. Meanwhile, ordinary people are left abandoned to suffer, driven to such despair that death itself may seem like the only escape. Through this work, the artist bears witness to the injustice and oppression taking place in Indonesia today. The work diligently crafted using a combination of acrylic paint, oil pastel, HVS paper, and magazine cutouts by Metalhead Melankolis. Framed in A6 size.
Why collect this work?
SEDATED sets its title’s condition of numbness against a visually active surface, suggesting that saturation by images can produce passivity rather than attention.
- The artist profile identifies Metalhead Melankolis as a poet and collage practitioner concerned with social and political unrest. In this work, clipped words operate as both statement and graphic structure.
- The photograph shows “DEGRADED,” “NEGLECTED” and “DEPLETED” layered over broken lettering and surrounded by cropped bodies, objects and decorative patterns. Their emphatic clarity is repeatedly challenged by competing fragments, making attention feel pressured and partial.
- Catalogue metadata records acrylic, oil pastel, HVS paper and magazine cutouts within 9.5 by 13 cm. This combination permits printed imagery, hand-applied colour and irregular paper boundaries to collide in a tightly compressed field.
- The artist describes the subject as injustice, environmental destruction and resource exploitation in Indonesia. The work is significant for how it repurposes magazine abundance to question whether relentless visual consumption conceals the losses its text names.
