Hidden Burdens Created from fragments of denim, this work reflects a period of my life after suffering a leg fracture. It explores the silent struggles people carry behind their smiles and daily routines. While pain is often hidden from public view, it shapes our thoughts, emotions, and experiences. Through layered textures and fragmented forms, the work invites viewers to reflect on the burdens we carry in silence and the strength required to keep moving forward.
Why collect this work?
A bowed figure is made difficult to separate from a field of dark fragments, turning concealment into the work’s central visual structure rather than merely its stated subject.
- MasterArt describes a practice centred on portraiture, identity and concealed emotion. Here, the artist’s reported concern with private burdens is carried by the figure’s compressed posture and partial absorption into its surroundings.
- In the photograph, pale pieces loosely mark the head and torso, while bent limbs form heavier diagonals below. Scattered red and white accents interrupt the dominant navy and charcoal without resolving the body clearly.
- Catalogued as denim and paint on canvas, the medium permits figure and ground to share the same fragmented vocabulary. Changes in scale, direction and tone establish the silhouette more than continuous outlines do.
- Made in 2025 and titled Hidden Burden, the work provides a focused case for considering how portraiture can withhold facial identity yet retain bodily specificity, locating meaning in posture, fragmentation and camouflage.
