In this painting, I embodied the spirit of a female samurai by blending abstraction and Eastern motifs with bold, angular forms. Working with acrylics, I created a striking contrast between red and black to convey a sense of strength and mystery. The piece radiates a powerful yet serene energy—perfect for inspiring courage and grace in any space. Japan Series. P.S. Canvas on board.
Why collect this work?
Angular robe panels turn the figure into a compact architecture, while the diagonally flaring hair ornaments carry its motion beyond the body.
- Imar describes her practice as converting recognizable figures into geometric visual systems. Here, that approach clarifies how costume, gesture and setting are organized through repeated wedges and slanting lines.
- In the photograph, dark blue-black masses anchor the figure against a pale ground. Red facets punctuate the robe and headpiece, while rails, trees and paths converge around her. The samurai identity depends partly on the title rather than explicit weaponry.
- The catalogued acrylic on canvas mounted to cardboard, measuring 35 by 50 cm, supports opaque blocks edged by assertive black contours. Scuffed-looking pale passages are visible in the image, though their physical texture cannot be confirmed from the photograph.
- Within a display about how contemporary painters adapt culturally specific character types, this work can prompt scrutiny of the distance between a named role, stylized costume and the visual evidence actually provided.
