Oscar Wilde: The Happy Prince (The Happy Prince, The Happy Prince and other Tales by Oscar Wilde, 1909) High above the city stood a statue of the Happy Prince on a slender column. It was completely gilded with thin leaves of fine gold, with two bright sapphires instead of eyes, and a large red ruby burning on the hilt of his sword. All the people admired him. Looking at the beautiful statue, they were happy that there is someone in the world who is quite happy. The already worthless statue of the prince was melted down in the furnace, but the leaden heart failed to melt, so it ended up in the garbage dump next to the dead swallow‘s body. Then when God commissioned one of his Angels to bring him the two most precious things, he brought him the prince‘s heart of lead and a dead swallow. „You have chosen well,“ said God, „for in my garden of paradise this little bird will sing forever, and in my city of gold the Happy Prince will praise me.“ The Happy Prince is a beautiful statue covered in gold leaf. He has sapphires instead of eyes and a ruby on the hilt of his sword. One day a swallow sat on the prince. Her friends had already flown off to warm lands and she was going to follow them. Suddenly the tears of the prince, who had never known sorrow and misery in his life, began to wet her. He tells the swallow that he is only now seeing all the poverty of his town. Therefore, he asks the swallow to gradually distribute his gems and gold flakes to the poor people. The swallow longs to fly away to her friends, but she obliges him. And when she also blows out the prince‘s eyes, blinding him, she decides to stay with him forever. But winter will come soon. The swallow freezes and the prince‘s heart of lead bursts with grief. Then they have the statue torn down and melted down. Only the heart of lead will not melt. That‘s why they throw it in the landfill along with the bird‘s corpse. God told one of his angels to bring him the two most valuable things from the city. The angel obeyed and brought the leaden heart and the dead bird. Adam expelled by God from Paradise - taught by the world, then accepted back by God? Can it be understood as atonement for one‘s own sin? The moment before this moment.
