Virevolte / Whirl is about surrendering to movement and rediscovering a freedom that was never truly lost. Sometimes, the wind already knows our name. When we stop resisting it, the body becomes lighter, and thoughts begin to loosen their hold. Movement becomes a form of trust — spontaneous, instinctive, almost like a dance no one is watching. In this moment of abandon, the figure reconnects with something essential: the freedom to simply move, breathe and be. . . . Artist's poetic text: . . . Sometimes the wind already knows our name. Then we stop resisting it. Our gestures grow lighter. Our thoughts loosen their grip. They simply move through the body. Like a breath. Like a flash of light. Like a dance no one is watching. Then movement becomes trust. And the body rediscovers the freedom it had never lost. . . .
Why collect this work?
A sweeping mass of hair turns a tightly cropped nude into an image of motion, while the hidden face keeps that motion from becoming a conventional portrait.
- Mahe states that her practice treats the female figure as a site of vulnerability, sensuality and freedom. Here, that concern is carried by posture rather than facial expression: the bowed head and raised hand leave the figure’s state open to interpretation.
- In the photograph, hair streams across the upper half of the composition and loops over the face. Its lateral force contrasts with the torso’s near-frontal weight, creating tension between bodily presence and apparent momentum.
- Catalogued as oil on linen, the painting uses long directional strokes for the hair and shorter, shifting marks around the body. Oil permits these transitions between opaque modelling and loosened edges, though the photograph cannot confirm the surface texture or exact colour.
- Encountering this work within contemporary figurative painting raises a specific question: can freedom be pictured without relying on an identifiable face? The cropped body, obscured features and forceful hair make anonymity central to that inquiry.
