Biography

Isabel Mahe is a French self-taught contemporary painter, born in 1963 and based in France. Her figurative practice is primarily centred on the female figure, exploring emotion, vulnerability, sensuality and inner strength. Light and colour play a central role in her work, while her paintings engage in dialogue with art history and contemporary visual culture. In recent years, painting and poetry have become closely connected in her practice, with poems accompanying her paintings without seeking to explain them. Her work has been exhibited in France and is held in private collections in Europe, the United States and Asia.

Artist Statement

My painting explores the female figure as a space of emotion, vulnerability, sensuality and freedom. I am interested in what lies beneath the visible image: inner states, memories, desires, departures and moments of transformation. Light and colour are essential to my practice. They allow me to move between intimacy and openness, between what is seen and what remains hidden. My work also enters into dialogue with art history, while drawing on contemporary images and experiences. More recently, poetry has become an integral part of my practice. My poems accompany my paintings without explaining them, creating another space for the viewer's imagination.
