Stay by Hosea Benjamin Explore Mondoir Studio Medium: photography Dimensions: 20 x 28 in Year: 2024 Price: $380.00 USD Status: available Years unraveled in breath, Love is buried beneath silence and distance. “Please stay,” she whispered The air held still, truth hanging like glass in between. Waiting for the one who vanished to return, not with blame, but with trembling grace Why collect this work?A tightly folded figure set beneath a broad, nearly empty field makes bodily compression the photograph’s central account of waiting and withdrawal. Benjamin describes his practice as joining portraiture and symbolism to explore memory, identity, and African experience. In Stay, he concentrates those aims within a solitary, unidentified figure rather than a detailed cultural setting. The subject clasps raised knees while one arm extends diagonally toward the lower edge. With facial detail obscured, posture carries the emotional force suggested by the title and the accompanying text about absence and hoped-for return.Catalogued as photography, the work fixes a controlled relation between figure and vacant backdrop. The hand meeting the frame’s edge leaves its reaching gesture unresolved, while the sparse ground withholds a specific location.Made in 2024, Stay provides a precise case for considering how portraiture can withhold recognizable likeness yet retain a strong sense of embodied presence through pose, cropping, and spatial imbalance.
