Presence explores the relationship between movement, light and open space. The falcon in flight emerges from a deeply textured surface, where metallic leaf, patination and controlled pictorial interventions create shifting reflections that change with the viewer’s position and the surrounding light. The layered landscape below reinforces the sense of distance and suspension, while the strong horizontal composition evokes freedom, strength and a continuous movement beyond the boundaries of the work.
Why collect this work?
A sharply simplified falcon crosses a dark field above low, layered bands. The unequal balance of open ground and compressed terrain makes flight register as sustained tension between lift and gravity.
- The artist’s statement identifies material, light and perception as central concerns. In this work, those interests are tested through a recognizable bird assembled from pointed, metallic-looking shapes rather than continuous modelling.
- Long wing feathers converge toward the compact head, carrying the eye from upper left to right. Below, overlapping horizontal forms anchor the broad composition without resolving into a specific landscape.
- The documented relief composite panel combines metallic leaf, acrylic and patina. Across its 190-centimetre width, relief and reflective material may cause different passages to gain or lose emphasis as lighting and viewpoint change.
- Presence provides a focused case for considering how a familiar emblem of flight can remain legible while surface, scale and changing reflection complicate its apparent directness.
