Nexus explores the relationship between strength, movement and light. The textured relief surface, enriched with metallic leaf, patination and controlled pictorial interventions, creates shifting reflections that change according to the viewer’s position and the surrounding light. The horse emerges through layered forms and contrasting metallic tones, balancing presence and abstraction.
Why collect this work?
A frontal horse is built from interlocking bands rather than continuous anatomy, making strength appear as an arrangement of separate, almost mobile parts.
- Cobalchini describes his practice as an investigation of material, light and perception. In Nexus, that stated concern helps explain the tension between a recognizable animal and a surface organized into abstract segments.
- The photograph shows the horse filling the vertical field, its face enclosed by a thin circular line. Sweeping mane and chest shapes imply motion, while the direct gaze and near symmetry hold the figure in place against the dark ground.
- Catalogue metadata identifies relief composite panel, metallic leaf, acrylic and patina. At 115 by 150 cm, these materials may give the broad gold, copper and silver-toned passages distinct reflective responses, although one photograph cannot establish their physical texture or changes under light.
- The work is particularly useful for considering how decorative metallic structure can carry figurative description: the same tapered bands define musculature, illumination and ornament without fully separating those roles.
