The internal pressure many women experience to meet the expectations attached to every role they occupy. The desire to be a good daughter, partner, friend, mother, or professional can gradually become a constant pursuit of perfection, where self-worth becomes tied to performance and approval. The work reflects on the emotional cost of this mindset the tendency to suppress personal needs, hide vulnerability, and feel inadequate when expectations are not met. It challenges the belief that a woman must constantly prove her value through perfection and instead calls for self-acceptance. Every woman is already enough. By embracing authenticity instead of perfection, she can live with greater freedom, confidence, and self-acceptance. I use this piece as an invitation to let go of impossible standards and celebrate the beauty of being unapologetically human.
Why collect this work?
A frontal portrait is divided into hundreds of hexagonal cells, making identity appear both individually formed and structured by a larger social pattern.
- Oyinlola’s statement identifies the beehive as a metaphor for women’s strength, resilience, and communal care. Here, that geometry also suggests the expectations imposed by belonging, complicating its affirmative meaning.
- Across the photographed surface, turquoise and navy cells articulate the face, while larger violet hexagons organize the background. The eyes and mouth resist complete abstraction, holding direct human presence against the repeated system.
- The catalogue records oil on canvas. Oil permits sharply separated dark outlines alongside tonal variation within the cells, allowing the pattern to operate as both facial modelling and a restrictive grid.
- Dated 2026 and catalogued at 10 by 12 centimetres, Enough VI concentrates a broad question of gendered performance into a small portrait. It is particularly relevant to collections examining how contemporary figuration uses repetition to test the boundary between self-definition and prescribed roles.
