Flourish Oyinlola In the pursuit of being accepted, respected, and valued, many women constantly strive to be the perfect daughter, partner, mother, friend, or professional. What begins as a desire to do well gradually becomes an endless need to meet impossible standards, turning perfection into a way of life rather than a choice. The problem is not the desire to grow or improve, but the belief that a woman's worth depends on how perfectly she fulfills every role. This way of thinking often leads women to ignore their own needs, hide their struggles, and carry emotional burdens in silence. They continue to give, achieve, and endure, believing they must always appear strong, capable, and flawless. In doing so, they slowly lose the freedom to simply be themselves. This piece challenges that mindset. It encourages women to question the unrealistic expectations they place on themselves and to recognize that they do not have to earn their value through perfection. Every woman is already enough. By embracing authenticity instead of perfection, she can live with greater freedom, confidence, and self-acceptance. I use this piece as an invitation to let go of impossible standards and celebrate the beauty of being unapologetically human.
Why collect this work?
A honeycomb grid covers the face while the hair forms a broad, nearly solid silhouette. The work sets a repeated structure against a distinctly rendered person, leaving open whether that structure supports identity or presses upon it.
- Oyinlola’s statement identifies the beehive as a metaphor for women’s strength, care and community. In this portrait, that intention complicates the grid: its cells can signify connection while their uniform spread can also suggest social expectations.
- In the photograph, blue and charcoal hexagons are interrupted by pale highlights, parted lips and eyes glancing sideways. These departures from the pattern preserve an individual expression without freeing the figure from the system covering her face and neck.
- Catalogued as oil on canvas and measuring 10 by 12 inches, the painting models the face through tonal changes inside repeated units. The documented medium permits both opaque passages and fine accents, although the photograph cannot establish surface texture or exact colour.
- Enough IV provides a focused case for considering how portraiture can represent gendered roles without illustrating them literally. Its compact format concentrates that question in the tension between collective pattern and personal bearing.
