The internal pressure many women experience to meet the expectations attached to every role they occupy. The desire to be a good daughter, partner, friend, mother, or professional can gradually become a constant pursuit of perfection, where self-worth becomes tied to performance and approval. The work reflects on the emotional cost of this mindset the tendency to suppress personal needs, hide vulnerability, and feel inadequate when expectations are not met. It challenges the belief that a woman must constantly prove her value through perfection and instead calls for self-acceptance. Every woman is already enough. By embracing authenticity instead of perfection, she can live with greater freedom, confidence, and self-acceptance. I use this piece as an invitation to let go of impossible standards and celebrate the beauty of being unapologetically human.
Why collect this work?
Enough I overlays a portrait with repeated cells, turning social expectation into a visible structure that both forms and partially obscures individual identity.
- Oyinlola describes the beehive as a metaphor for women’s strength, resilience, and care. In this painting, that positive association remains present, but repetition also supports the artist’s stated concern with pressure to perform prescribed roles.
- The photograph shows small blue cells shaping the face against a larger turquoise grid. Dark hair cuts across these patterns, while asymmetrical eyes and highlighted lips preserve the specificity of the sitter within an ordered field.
- The documented oil-on-canvas medium allows opaque dark areas, bounded polygonal marks, and tonal shifts within the face. On the compact 10-by-12-inch canvas, the many cells compress attention around the sitter’s gaze.
- The work is particularly useful for examining how portraiture can represent identity through a system rather than likeness alone. Its tension between patterned belonging and personal distinction gives concrete form to questions of conformity, self-presentation, and sufficiency.
