Before The Earth Meets You by Faith Gaufo Explore Mondoir Studio Medium: Oil on canvas Dimensions: 60 x 88 cm Year: 2023 Price: $1437.00 USD Status: available Part of the Pearl & Petal Collection, Before the Earth Meets You portray a moment of surrender between Earth and sky. A woman, her form merging with a bird in flight, embodies trust in the unseen. Like the rest of the Pearl & Petal Collection, this piece explores the fragility and strength of womanhood, the interplay of nature and soul, and the quiet promises that exist beyond what the eyes can see. It is a meditation on trust—the unseen forces that cradle us just before the fall. Why collect this work?A bird crossing the woman’s face turns the painting’s stated theme of surrender into a more ambiguous image, where trust also entails obscured sight and divided identity. Gaufo describes her practice as centred on figurative painting, flora and fauna, with oil as her primary medium. Those interests converge here rather than appearing as separate subjects. In the supplied photograph, sweeping feathers and hair conceal most of the face, leaving one eye exposed. Flowers press in from the left while the black ground removes any clear setting, concentrating attention on the fusion of human, bird and plant forms. The documented oil-on-canvas medium permits gradual tonal modelling across the grey figure and bird. Restrained pink and green passages, as photographed, separate the flowers and leaves from the otherwise near-monochrome scene.Within a collection concerned with contemporary portraiture, this 2023 painting can complicate comparison with conventional likenesses: identity is constructed through concealment and overlap rather than facial description alone.
