“Awakening in Desert” explores the moment of inner illumination emerging from silence, emptiness, and transformation. Inspired by the emotional and energetic landscape of the desert, the painting reflects the awakening of consciousness through contrast — light and darkness, stillness and movement, solitude and expansion. The luminous yellow forms symbolize clarity, life force, and spiritual awakening, while the layered darker tones evoke the depth of inner experience and transformation. The vertical movement within the composition suggests ascension, emergence, and the quiet unfolding of a new state of being. Created intuitively through gesture, texture, and layered color fields, the work invites the viewer into a contemplative space where resilience, energy, and inner light coexist.
Why collect this work?
In the photograph, a bright upper field is interrupted by vertical dark masses and a jagged white passage, making illumination feel contested rather than serene.
- Arutyunyan describes her practice as intuitive and associates recurring spirals and light forms with personal evolution. Here, two small spiral marks punctuate the larger blocks without determining a fixed narrative.
- Broad yellow, blue, purple, white and near-black areas meet through scraped-looking edges and abrupt overlaps. These directional boundaries pull attention downward and sideways, countering the artist’s stated intention of upward movement.
- Catalogued as oil on canvas, 40 by 30 cm, the work uses opacity and layered colour to separate adjoining zones. The photograph suggests visible brush and tool marks, though it cannot establish their physical relief.
- The painting is particularly useful for considering how abstract colour can carry spiritual claims without illustrating them. Its resistant dark intervals complicate the catalogue’s account of awakening, preserving uncertainty within the promised emergence.
