Mata Hari is a limited edition of 25, measuring 140 × 106 cm. The image is based on an original hand-drawn work created using ink, marker and metallic ink. Each 2026 edition is individually hand-retouched by the artist after printing with ink and metallic gold ink, restoring the depth and reflective quality of the original metallic details. As every piece is finished by hand, subtle variations make each work individually finished within the edition. Each work is signed and numbered by the artist. Please allow up to three weeks for the hand-finishing process before dispatch.
Why collect this work?
A strict mirror structure doubles the titled Mata Hari into a self-facing emblem, using repetition to show how a named person can be remade as a decorative persona.
- Frikh states that her practice examines how women become images, icons or archetypes. Here, the title identifies Mata Hari, while stylisation displaces individual likeness in favour of coiffure, cosmetics and ornament.
- Two near-identical figures incline toward a narrow grey gap. Dense black eye shapes puncture the pale faces, while patterned gold-toned panels and orchids frame bodies defined mostly by blank white fields and spare outlines.
- The catalogue describes an archival fine-art print, hand-retouched with ink and metallic gold ink. Printing supports consistent repetition across the edition, while the added ink permits small differences between impressions and metallic passages that may shift with light.
- At 140 by 106 centimetres, the work gives fashion-illustration conventions a bodily scale. Its doubling makes it pertinent to displays examining celebrity, reproduction and the conversion of historical figures into recognisable visual types.
