Et Dieu créa la Femme is an homage to Brigitte Bardot and to the image of free, sensual and cinematic femininity she came to embody. The figure, with her direct gaze and assured pose, emerges against a deep grey background, surrounded by graphic gold elements that bring together glamour, sophistication and references to fashion illustration. The work plays with the contrast between the black-and-white figure, the richness of the gold and the precision of the drawing. True to Belinda Frikh’s visual language, it explores the codes of feminine beauty while giving the figure a strong, independent and immediately recognisable presence. Each piece is produced as an archival Fine Art print and individually hand-retouched by the artist with ink and metallic gold ink. Please allow up to three weeks for hand-retouching before dispatch.
Why collect this work?
A stark white figure is partly concealed by repeated wing forms, turning an image of glamour into a contest between bodily outline, ornament and visual recognition.
- Frikh states that she examines how femininity is stylised into icon or archetype. Here, the catalogue identifies the figure as an homage to Brigitte Bardot, but likeness remains subordinate to graphic construction.
- In the photograph, black lines divide the elongated white silhouette into hair, face and bent limbs. Gold-coloured insect wings cross its edges and gather around the torso, alternately framing and obscuring the body against charcoal grey.
- The documented archival print establishes a repeatable graphic base, while hand-retouching in ink and metallic gold ink permits variation between impressions. The restricted palette sharpens the tension between flat pattern and figurative legibility.
- The work is particularly useful for considering how fashion illustration can both construct and interrupt an idealised female image. Its decorative motifs do not simply embellish the figure; they control which parts become visible and memorable.
