Biography
Amaal Kebabti is a Scottish-Algerian contemporary visual artist based in Glasgow, Scotland. Working primarily in abstract painting, her practice explores identity, memory, belonging and cultural heritage through expressive mark-making, layered textures and rich colour. Drawing on both her Scottish upbringing and Algerian heritage, she creates large-scale works that investigate the relationship between emotion, place and personal history. Alongside her independent studio practice, Amaal has exhibited her work, completed private commissions and collaborated with organisations including Rangers F.C. and Crystal Palace F.C. Her work is held in private collections and continues to gain recognition for its distinctive contemporary approach to abstraction.Artist Statement
My practice explores how identity, memory and cultural heritage can be communicated through contemporary abstract painting. Working intuitively with heavy-body acrylics, oils and texture mediums, I build layered surfaces that evoke emotion, movement and atmosphere rather than literal representation. As a Scottish-Algerian artist, I am interested in the space between cultures and how experiences of belonging, migration and personal history shape identity. My current research investigates how Algerian architecture, textiles, decorative traditions and material culture, alongside the landscapes and environments of Scotland, can be translated into an abstract visual language through colour, gesture and surface. The physicality of paint is central to my work. I embrace material experimentation, allowing texture, layering and mark-making to become an integral part of the narrative. Rather than directing interpretation, I create paintings that invite viewers to bring their own memories and emotional experiences to the work.Exhibitions
