Relocated to a new home, he observed a cactus thriving unexpectedly in a tropical environment, a sight that struck him as a profound metaphor for adaptability and growth. This revelation spurred a creative evolution that would later define his work: the use of media that echoes resilience, transformation, and the unexpected vitality found in everyday life.Mochamad Samba, known in the art world as Mocsa, is an Indonesian mixed-media artist whose work is celebrated for its exploration of the raw and visceral spectrum of human emotions. Born in Depok, West Java, in 1995, Mocsa has carved a niche in the realm of abstract and expressionist art. Based in Kabupaten Sukoharjo, his creations stand out for their emotive depth, inviting viewers to engage with themes of trauma, healing, and the silent stories embedded in daily life.Self-taught yet profoundly insightful, Mocsa's artistry is defined by a commitment to personal exploration rather than traditional academic routes. His unique voice began to take shape following his participation in a young artists workshop at Hanafi Studio Paper Gallery, a pivotal experience that imbued him with both the confidence and critical feedback essential to an emerging artist. Here, under the scrutiny of seasoned curators, Mocsa's emotionally charged works were recognized for their potential, encouraging him to delve deeper into his own emotional landscapes.Reflecting on his early years, Mocsa attributes much of his artistic sensitivity to his upbringing in Depok. His journey as an artist commenced in solitude, experimenting with whatever materials he had at hand. The shift from personal contemplation to professional pursuit was catalyzed by his decision to attend the Hanafi Studio workshop. "Oke, sebelum saya bergabung di workshop Seniman Muda...perjalanan artistik saya hanya sebatas sebagai penikmat, terus mencoba untuk melakukannya dengan tool seadanya," he recounted, illustrating the leap from private musings to public expression. This workshop was a turning point, propelling Mocsa into a more experimental phase. "Setelah saya mengikuti WhatsApp itu saya jadi lebih berani untuk menggunakan media-media lain," he shared, highlighting his newfound audacity to incorporate unconventional materials like disposable bags, cement, and Chinese ink. This openness to experimentation has since become a hallmark of his practice, allowing him to blend the boundaries between different media and challenge traditional notions of art.Mocsa's oeuvre is rich in texture and contrasts, a testament to his belief in art as a reflection of emotional honesty rather than visual perfection. His works are not merely about the aesthetics but are vessels for deeper reflection. "I use art as a space to express emotions that are often difficult to articulate through words," he explains. Each piece is an honest, spontaneous emotional response, crafted from layers of acrylic, ink, pastel, and even everyday objects like paper bags that carry their own stories and textures.Central to Mocsa's practice is the exploration of themes that are both personal and universal. His art delves into emotional struggles and the silent narratives of everyday life, inspired by the ordinary yet profound aspects of human experience. "Saya tertarik untuk mengeksplorasi hal-hal halus dan seringkali terabaikan dari kehidupan sehari-hari," he notes, emphasizing his focus on the unnoticed yet significant elements that shape our existence. This thematic focus finds physical form in his exhibitions, which have spanned the globe from Indonesia to Spain. His participation in numerous exhibitions, such as "Last Birthday" in Yogyakarta and "Distance" at Lacuna Festival in Lanzarote, Spain, showcases his ability to engage diverse audiences through his multi-layered approach to art. While awards have eluded him thus far, his consistent presence in galleries and festivals marks him as a significant contemporary artist in Indonesia’s vibrant art scene.Mocsa's journey has not been without its challenges. As a self-taught artist, he faced the daunting task of finding his place in a competitive field. Yet, it is the very act of overcoming these hurdles that fuels his creativity. "Untuk eksplorasi tentu, karena saya enggak mau karya-karya saya itu hanya terpentok di satu media saja," he asserts, demonstrating a tireless commitment to expanding his artistic horizons.Today, Mocsa continues to push boundaries, currently working on a new series that promises to incorporate wire as a structural element, moving beyond conventional canvas. "Saya tidak akan menggunakan kanvas, tapi akan menggunakan kawat untuk menjadi penopang karya-karya saya nantinya," he reveals, hinting at a future where his art will occupy new dimensions, both physically and conceptually.Looking ahead, Mocsa envisions his practice as a continuous dialogue with the world, one that invites others to reflect on their own experiences. "Untuk para pembaca Mundoir, nikmatilah karya-karya saya dengan pendekatan yang lebih dalam," he advises, encouraging a thoughtful engagement with his work.As Mocsa stands on the cusp of new artistic ventures, his story is a reminder of the power of adaptability and the profound beauty found in the everyday—a lesson whispered by a cactus thriving in unexpected terrain. His art, much like that resilient plant, continues to grow in unexpected places, offering viewers a space for reflection and connection.
