As I lay down for bed, tiredly but feeling good from my night's routine, I brought out my camera and took a selfie. Midnight Series is about self-care, taking care of ourselves and taking care of one another. Through the boy and girl editions, I wanted to encourage those little moments of care, whether it's taking time for ourselves after a long day or showing up for someone we love. Because self-care is for everyone, regardless of gender.
Why collect this work?
A steep, cropped viewpoint turns an ordinary bedtime selfie into a study of self-possession: the closed eyes and surrounding folds suspend the figure between daily routine and sleep.
- Uchennayaa identifies this figure as part of her recurring Chu characters and states that their distinctive lips refer to an Nsibidi symbol for love. Here, the sharply yellow mouth becomes a small focal point within the predominantly blue composition.
- The figure lies diagonally across the lower half of the image, while enlarged bedding fills the upper field. This unequal division makes rest feel sheltered but not sentimental, with the cropped arm preserving the source image’s casual immediacy.
- The documented acrylic-on-canvas medium permits broad, opaque passages alongside smaller graphic details. In the photograph, simplified contours and shifts between pale and dark blue separate body, clothing, and bedding without strict naturalism.
- The artist describes the series as encouraging self-care across gender. Encountered within that stated framework, this girl edition gives private routine a visible form while leaving the figure self-contained rather than presented for our attention.
