As I lay down for bed, tiredly but feeling good from my night's routine, I brought out my camera and took a selfie. Midnight Series is about self-care, taking care of ourselves and taking care of one another. Through the boy and girl editions, I wanted to encourage those little moments of care, whether it's taking time for ourselves after a long day or showing up for someone we love. Because self-care is for everyone, regardless of gender.
Why collect this work?
A tightly cropped, reclining profile turns an ordinary nighttime routine into a study of care: bodily exposure is balanced by the figure’s closed eyes, turned face, and broad band of pale bedding.
- Uchennayaa describes recurring figures called Chu and identifies their distinctive lips with an Nsibidi sign for love. Here, the yellow lips become a small focal accent rather than a conventional portrait detail.
- The shoulder and arm extend beyond the frame while the head occupies its centre. This cropping withholds the complete body and concentrates attention on rest, grooming, and the figure’s inward posture.
- The documented acrylic on canvas permits broad, opaque areas alongside softer tonal transitions. Warm browns model the skin against a cool, pale ground, while pink headwear sharply marks the routine of self-maintenance.
- The artist states that the series began with a bedtime selfie and addresses self-care across genders. The boy edition is significant for placing masculine embodiment within a tender, private ritual rather than public performance.
