In addition to the unique style, the textured surface of the paintings is a symbol of chaos, and for those who are attracted to uncertainty, it is beauty. A layer of white, cream, gray, and black - chaos hides the colored layers underneath. This embodies the truth that behind the chaos lies a glimmer of hope and something beautiful, like a flower in a field after a war... maybe it's even something worth fighting for. Just as a little girl offered an unwrapped lollipop to a horse, we understand that sometimes we need to step forward and step outside our limited lives or chaos in order to give hope to what we consider “wild.” But a “wild” person must also unfold what is offered to him in order to see what is offered to him, to see the color of hope and taste the sweetness of beauty. The artist attached an unwrapped lollipop to the painting with a ribbon, which is not depicted in the painting. Only the new owner of the painting will see what color it is, or recognize its taste, or perhaps not unwrap it so that it remains a mystery.
Why collect this work?
Pale sweeps cover and divide the scene while leaving horses, a reaching girl, and shards of colour partly legible. Concord appears here as a fragile act of contact rather than settled harmony.
- Tayo identifies the horse with instinctive energy and the girl with trust and vulnerability. This stated intention supports the contrast in scale, although the pictured encounter remains unresolved rather than illustrating a clear reconciliation.
- The photograph shows one horse looming over the girl’s extended hand and another cropped at the right edge. Vertical seams and diagonal bands break continuous space, making recognition depend on scattered outlines and exposed colour.
- The documented oil and acrylic medium can support both opaque coverage and linear definition. In the photograph, broad ivory-toned passages appear to interrupt black contours, turquoise, and magenta without fully erasing them.
- Catalogue metadata reports a ribbon-attached lollipop that is not visible in the photograph. That concealed object makes this painting a pointed study of withholding, shifting the question of what lies beneath from painted layers to the artwork’s physical form.
