In “Blue Emotion In Veiled Pink,” I wanted to capture the private moment when a feeling becomes too present to ignore, yet remains difficult to name. The male figure is suspended in introspection, neither fully withdrawn nor ready to reveal what is moving beneath the surface. His gaze suggests the quiet distance we sometimes create while trying to understand ourselves. I built the face through layered blues, allowing each mark to carry a trace of thought, vulnerability, and restraint. Around him, soft pink gradually intensifies, creating an emotional field rather than a literal place. It feels to me like an inner sensation expanding outward, blurring the boundary between the figure and his surroundings. The green clothing grounds the composition, offering balance and a subtle sense of protection amid this psychological exposure. Watercolor pencil allowed me to move between precise, expressive lines and gently diffused color. That tension reflects the struggle between controlling emotion and allowing it to flow. I hope this work invites viewers into a pause, where uncertainty is not something to solve, but something to sit with tenderly.
Why collect this work?
Blue hatching redirects a recognisable profile into a field of currents, making emotion register through the face’s construction rather than through a conventional expression.
- Reis describes her figuration as emotional translation rather than portraiture. That intention clarifies the enlarged, displaced eyes and elastic contours, although their effect remains open to interpretation.
- In the photograph, the head nearly fills the sheet. Brown hair-like forms weigh across its top, while the pink surround and green garment press close, leaving little spatial release.
- The documented watercolor pencil supports both narrow linear marks and broader colour passages. Here, repeated blue strokes articulate facial planes, while pink marks make the background feel active rather than neutral.
- Encountered among contemporary distortions of portraiture, this 2023 work provides a focused case for considering how colour and anatomical displacement can loosen the face from identity without erasing human presence.
