"Cubes And Goats" emerged from my fascination with the playful dance between structure and freedom. I wanted to create a world where reality bends and imagination soars. The floating cubes are not just geometric shapes; they are gateways to possibilities, inviting tiny goats to explore new heights. The vibrant, sunlit background pulses with an energy that feels alive, urging curiosity and wonder. The warm yellows and greens wrap around the scene like a joyful embrace, lifting the spirit and sparking a sense of adventure. In this piece, I hope to share a moment of whimsy and delight, where the unexpected becomes a source of joy. I want viewers to feel that playful tension and let their imaginations take flight, finding a little piece of magic to carry into their everyday lives.
Why collect this work?
Two sharply defined cubes dominate a field of loose marks, while goats rendered at miniature scale turn geometric order into an improbable habitat. The work’s central tension lies in this mismatch between rigid structure and living movement.
- Balmuchu describes cubes as recurring signs of structure, containment, and resistance in his recent practice. Here, that stated concern becomes legible through the goats, whose bodies test the blocks as platforms and obstacles.
- The photograph shows one goat poised at the larger cube’s lower edge and another reclining atop the smaller form. Their relative scale makes the cubes seem monumental, yet the absence of cast shadows leaves both blocks spatially unanchored.
- The documented acrylic-on-canvas medium permits a useful contrast here: opaque planes and crisp boundaries establish the cubes, while broader, irregular marks keep the surrounding field optically active.
- Encountering this painting means negotiating incompatible cues of scale, gravity, and ground. Its particular interest is how a familiar animal converts abstract volumes into a provisional landscape without resolving where that landscape exists.
