Woven entirely from discarded electronic cables and wires, Essence reclaims what the world threw out and gives it dignity. The tangled lines become veins, memory, and connection, evidence of use, energy, and life lived. In this work, waste becomes foundation. The essence is not what we add, but what we already carry: resilience, conductivity, and the ability to transmit light even after being abandoned.
Why collect this work?
Closely packed cable segments construct a face from many discontinuous lines, making identity appear assembled rather than simply depicted.
- Adekunle describes her practice as turning electronic waste into portraits concerned with sustainability, identity, and African communal resilience. Here, that stated aim is focused through a single, frontal figure.
- In the photograph, dark cords define the head, neck, hair, and features against a warm red-orange field. Short grey, red, blue, and pale lengths break the face into shifting bands, while the concentrated gaze holds the fragments together.
