Defiant is an artwork make of electronic cables and fabric on canvas. She looks forward, Unbothered, Unbroken. Defiant is a portrait of resilience built from what the world calls waste. Electronic cables, stripped, cut, and rewired form her face. Lines of data, energy, and pressure become skin, story, and strength. Her hair, braided and crowned with a yellow tie, is made of fiber and refusal. Rootedand held. The green striped fabric at her shoulders grounds her in culture, in fabric that carries history. Against a bold red background, she does portal her strength .
Why collect this work?
A three-quarter portrait converts linear electronic material into facial structure, balancing a firmly directed gaze with a visibly pieced, discontinuous surface.
- Adekunle states that her use of recycled electronic cables connects environmental accountability with the strength of African communities. In this work, that aim takes the focused form of an individual portrait rather than a general ecological message.
- Short, differently coloured lengths articulate the face, while continuous dark lines establish the brow, eyes, nose and jaw. The head turns sideways as the eyes angle outward, creating alertness without resolving the sitter into a single expression.
- Catalogued as electronic cables and fabric on canvas, the medium supports contrasting kinds of line. Narrow cable pieces build angular features, thick braided forms enlarge the gathered hair, and striped fabric gives the shoulders a broad, frayed base.
- Titled Defiant and dated 2026, the work is a concrete case for examining how discarded technological matter can carry likeness, adornment and assertions of endurance within contemporary portraiture.
