Biography

I am a prominent Nigerian digital artist known for my use of Microsoft Word in creating art that engages with my personal experiences within a technological environment. Through my work, I center the experiences of persons regarded as “the others” in the society, often leading the audience to interrogate their own biases. Born in Aba, I am self-taught, taking interest first in writing, and shortly after visual art. My work has been exhibited in various international fairs, galleries and museum shows; and I am regarded as an OG in crypto art, being the first-ever African artist in the NFT space.

Artist Statement

My work begins where most people’s work ends: in a standard Microsoft Word document. Growing up in Nigeria, I didn’t have access to expensive design suites or high-end canvases, so I turned to the tool I had. This choice evolved into reclamation aesthetics, which here means taking something rigid, something meant for "business," and reclaiming it for the soul. When I sit down to create, I am building a world out of the ordinary. I use the same circles and squares you might use for a flowchart to instead build the curve of a shoulder or the pattern of a traditional cloth. My art is an invitation to see the beauty in the "incorrect" use of technology. I paint to protest and I paint to celebrate. Whether I am exploring gender fluidity or the power of a quiet gaze, I am always looking for the human element within the machine. By placing my work on the blockchain, I am ensuring that our stories—African stories, digital stories etc—are preserved forever, unedited and unapologetic.
