Biography

Oluwasayo Olaore is a contemporary Nigerian visual artist and muralist whose practice utilizes figurative painting and large-scale public installations to investigate the psychological continuum between internal emotional states and external societal action. Stylistically characterized by a striking versatility across mediums, Olaore’s work serves as an intellectual catalyst, prompting viewers to confront their own emotional landscapes and fostering a deeper communal empathy. Olaore holds a Bachelor of Arts in Fine and Applied Arts, with a specialization in Painting, from the prestigious Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in Ile-Ife, Nigeria. His formal academic foundation is complemented by rigorous studio mentorship under notable figures of contemporary Nigerian art, including the celebrated illustrator Josy Ajiboye and multidisciplinary artist Damilola Opedun. He further refined his technical mastery and material fluidity through intensive residencies at the studios of Ifeoluwa Alade and Joseph Idowu, alongside participations in prominent workshops across the region. Reflecting a robust institutional presence, Olaore’s work has been included in significant exhibitions both within Nigeria and internationally, showcasing with platforms such as Alexis Galleries, the Life In My City Art Festival (LIMCAF), Artfrika, and the IFECTIVITY series. In 2023, his leadership within the West African emerging art scene was solidified through his appointment as Chairman of SO FAR, the highly regarded annual exhibition for graduating artists at Obafemi Awolowo University. Currently operating as a rapidly rising figure in the global contemporary art landscape, Olaore continues to execute sweeping public murals and canvas works that challenge cultural conventions and expand the boundaries of modern African portraiture.

Artist Statement

Oluwasayo T. Olaore is a contemporary visual artist and muralist whose practice investigates the profound architecture of human emotion, generational synergy, and cultural legacy. At the core of Olaore’s work is an immersion into the emotional landscapes of his subjects, translating their struggles, triumphs, and lived histories into striking visual narratives that challenge contemporary societal norms. Working across a diverse material collection including acrylics, oils, watercolor, charcoal, and large-scale public murals, Olaore bridges modern, figurative subjects with a distinct style of aesthetics. His visual language is characterized by layered transparencies, silhouettes and a meticulous depiction of forms: sharp, angular lines map the contours of the face, while intricately designed, majestic headgears crown his subjects. Notably, Olaore employs the conceptual choice of leaving the hands of some of his subjects unpainted- a deliberate omission that invites dialogue and shifts the focus to the psychological depth of the figure. Through defining bodies of work, such as his ongoing series “YOUR WORLD,” Olaore explores individual perspective, ancestral presence, and parental synergy. By balancing raw human vulnerability with disciplined geometric abstraction, his work transcends mere portraiture, serving as a catalyst for empathy and establishing a universal space where viewers are compelled to reflect on their own emotional landscapes.
