My mouth is bound in folds of silence, not by rope, not by force, but by exhaustion. This is the silence of someone who has thought deeply, felt deeply, and still found no strength left to speak. There are days when the mind is loud, when ideas crash against the walls of the heart, begging to be released. But the body is tired. The spirit is bruised. The world feels unsafe. So we choose quiet, not because we lack wisdom, but because we lack capacity. This work speaks for every student who stayed silent in class, though they knew the answer. Every adult who swallowed their pain to keep the peace. Every soul who chose quiet over conflict. Every heart that needed to breathe before it could speak again. It reminds us that silence is not weakness. Sometimes, silence is self-preservation. Sometimes, silence is healing in progress. Sometimes, silence is a promise: "I will speak again-when I am strong enough."
Why collect this work?
Aphonia turns blocked speech into a crowded visual structure: a frontal figure’s mouth is covered by layered hands while words, symbols, and repeated loops press in from every side.
- Ajayi states that his paintings address less obvious feelings through the body. Here, that aim is legible in the contrast between the figure’s blank eyes, obstructed mouth, and densely active surroundings, though the image leaves the source of restraint unresolved.
- The square composition centers an enlarged head and patterned green shirt. Hands form horizontal bands across the lower face, while scattered phrases and diagram-like objects compete for attention, making silence appear full of unvoiced material rather than empty.
