Subtle is my meditation on the quiet existence of women—an existence that does not announce itself, yet refuses to disappear or cease making an impact. It speaks of women as intercessors: the unseen doors that bridge the supernatural and the physical, the silent passage through which balance, healing, and continuity flow. Women are impossibly beautiful souls—too profound to ignore—yet they often move without noise. In their stillness, they shift weight, alter outcomes, and move mountains within society, not through force, but through presence. This series explores beauty through elegance, grace, and class, proposing that strength does not always roar. Sometimes it breathes. Sometimes it waits. Sometimes it exists in silence, fully conscious of its depth and power. I conclude that what endures is rarely rushed. What lasts is handled with patience—stitched rather than constructed—formed through care, time, and intentional devotion.
Why collect this work?
Subtle sets a frontal, composed face against an expansive dark silhouette, using contrast between geometric restraint and dense floral ornament to frame quiet presence as a form of authority.
- Okunade describes the work as a meditation on women whose influence operates without announcement. That intention clarifies the portrait’s steady gaze, though the image itself sustains the claim through formal emphasis rather than narrative action.
- The face is assembled from rectangular tonal planes, while outlined eyes and lips interrupt the grid with sharp definition. Around it, clustered flowers spread laterally, making the centered figure appear both adorned and structurally supported.
- The catalogue documents acrylic on canvas and classifies the work as mixed media. In the photograph, ridged dark passages and raised-looking floral forms distinguish hair, face, and clothing, but the additional material and physical texture cannot be confirmed from this view.
- At 12 by 14 inches, the concentrated scale suits close study of how portraiture can distribute power between facial expression, pattern, and ornament rather than relying on gesture or setting.
