Crown of Union This piece celebrates the women who have upheld the spirit of unity in Nigeria, women whose touch not only blesses this great nation but also extends across the African continent and the diaspora. During my research for this series, I was reminded of a mantra I hold dear: “A woman is home.” It reflects the depth of unity found in women who build, nurture, and bring people together. This series is a tribute to all the women in history, past and present, who have fostered harmony in this land we call home. They wear the Crown of Union, representing those who fought tirelessly to bring peace to the very table where we now dine and celebrate.
Why collect this work?
A grid of painted squares fragments the crowned sitter yet preserves her commanding presence, framing unity as an assembly of distinct parts rather than a seamless whole.
- Okunade describes this 2025 series as a tribute to women who foster cohesion across Nigeria, Africa and the diaspora. The single crowned figure concentrates that collective theme into an image of individual authority.
- In the photograph, squared passages cross the face, clothing and blue ground. Precisely outlined eyes and red lips interrupt the grid, while the sideways gaze adds watchfulness to the formal pose.
- The documented acrylic-on-canvas medium supports both flat blocks and fine delineation. Subtle shifts among blacks, greys and browns model the face, while gold, white and red establish visual emphasis.
- Set against conventions of royal portraiture, the crown and ruff-like collar raise a pointed question: who is publicly pictured as a maker of social and national cohesion? The work assigns ceremonial prominence to that role.
