Crown of Union This piece celebrates the women who have upheld the spirit of unity in Nigeria, women whose touch not only blesses this great nation but also extends across the African continent and the diaspora. During my research for this series, I was reminded of a mantra I hold dear: “A woman is home.” It reflects the depth of unity found in women who build, nurture, and bring people together. This series is a tribute to all the women in history, past and present, who have fostered harmony in this land we call home. They wear the Crown of Union, representing those who fought tirelessly to bring peace to the very table where we now dine and celebrate.
Why collect this work?
A tiled field breaks both sitter and ground into shifting units, while the sharply patterned braids preserve the profile’s commanding coherence. Unity appears here not as sameness, but as an identity assembled from visible differences.
- Okunade’s statement links his practice to women’s strength and social roles. For this 2025 portrait, he specifically describes the series as honouring women who foster unity in Nigeria, Africa and the diaspora.
- In the photograph, the face turns away from direct eye contact. The dark silhouette, stacked buns and repeated rows of braids hold against a green-blue grid, while two small orange earrings create a concentrated accent.
- The documented acrylic-on-canvas medium permits opaque blocks and fine repeated marks. Here, those contrasting modes separate the measured background and faceted skin from the more linear treatment of hair.
- The painting is particularly useful for examining how portraiture can connect individual presence with collective commemoration without relying on narrative action or public symbols.
